To get the accurate Chevy 5.3 firing order, I split the cylinders into two groups comprising those with odd numberings in one group, and those with even numberings in the other group. The cylinders with odd numberings are the components of bank 1, located on the right-hand side. How to Find the Firing Order of the Chevy 5.3
Knowing how to find the Chevy 5.3 firing order is necessary to determine the firing order. Understanding the sequences of the firing order is almost impossible if you can’t find the Chevy 5.3 firing order in the first place. To find the firing order of your Chevy 5.3, there are several steps you have to follow.
For this exercise, I will be explaining how to find the Chevy 5.3 firing order on cylinder #1 only, but the same process applies to all other cylinders of the Chevy 5.3 engine.
To find the Chevy 5.3 firing order, you need to:
- Loosen the bolts/screws holding the cylinder head cover in place before proceeding with removing the cylinder head cover.
- Locate the position of the intake and exhaust camshafts of cylinder #1. The intake camshaft is usually at the right while the exhaust camshaft is at the left.
- Find the location of the engine crankshaft. Then, use a socket/wrench to turn the engine crankshaft in a clockwise motion (the direction in which the engine runs). The crankshaft is turned to set cylinder #1 of the Chevy 5.3 engine to the top dead center.
- Observe the movements of the intake and exhaust camshafts as you keep turning the engine crankshaft. The Chevy 5.3 engine will be at the top dead center when the heads of the intake and exhaust camshafts are facing upwards in the same direction.
At this point, you have found the firing order on cylinder #1 of the Chevy 5.3 engine. Note that the cylinders are paired together and the paired cylinders get to the top dead center at the same time. So, in this case, where cylinder #1 reached the top dead center, cylinder #8 should also be at the top dead center because they are paired in the firing order.
How to Determine the Firing Order On a Chevy 5.3
As I said earlier, the processes used to find the Chevy 5.3 firing order are linked to those involved in determining the Chevy 5.3 firing order. In other words, the steps for determining the Chevy 5.3 firing order are the continuation of the steps for finding the firing order (which I have already listed earlier).
After you’ve located the first cylinder pairing for the Chevy 5.3 engine firing (cylinder #1 and cylinder #8), continue turning the engine crankshaft until another cylinder pair gets to the top dead center. Remember that the cylinders are at the top dead center whenever the tips of the intake and exhaust camshafts face upwards in the same direction.

Repeat the same process till the last two cylinder pairs (#6 and #5, and #4 and #3) get to the top dead center.
After the cycle of the firing order has been completed, the cycle will start all over again from cylinder #1.
